(07/07/2023) The Cajon is a box drum that originated in Perú. They are staples of Afro-Peruvian music, and was later brought to Spain and integrated into flamenco. I tried my hand at making a traditional one, which meant no snares on the inside, just a box. The front side is thinner than the rest in order to resonate, and it is attached with screws in order to tune it’s sound. It was a great experience, as I love the energy and vibrance of Festejo and other Afro-Peruvian music, and I wanted to capture it in the designs of the Cajon with vibrant shapes and other staples of this genre of music: The guitar, and, of course, the dancing!
